DOUBLE RETURNS FOR POULTRY RENDERERS
Using Sturtevant’s Whirlwind® Air Classifier
Sturtevant Whirlwind® Air Classifiers offers an exceptional ability to separate poultry meal and other animal feeds into products with higher protein, higher mineral and reduced ash content. When animal feed meals made from poultry by-products are classified, the protein content can be increased thereby providing value added materials.
Air classified fines product with high protein and low ash is used for premium pet food, mostly dogs & cats. The benefits are reduced mineral content, increased digestibility and renal health in pets.
Air classified coarse product with regular ash is used as the main poultry mean/bone meal feed for chickens.
Material to be classified is fed through a top-mounted inlet and falls directly to a distributing plate which spins the material laterally, forming an “umbrella” of thinly spread particles. Carefully controlled ascending air currents carry “fines” upward to the final selection zone. Here rejecter blades emit centrifugal force which acts to preclude oversize particles entering the “fines” chamber. Oversize low protein poultry meals drops out of the tailings cones while high protein poultry meal “fines” are exhausted to a cyclone or bag collector.

The Sturtevant Whirlwind® Air Classifier balance the physical principles of centrifugal force, drag force and gravity to generate a high-precision method of classifying particles according to size or density.
The heavy duty Whirlwind Air Classifier uses less horsepower than other styles of classifier and incorporates a self-contained fan and rejecter blade classification system. Its internal fan design does not require Cyclones, Airlocks or Baghouse to collect the fines. The feed is conveyed into the air separator by gravity. The fines and coarse also exit the air classifier by gravity. Major changes in product fineness are achieved by changing the quantity of internal selector blades. Minor changes are achieved by adjusting the position of external control valves.
