Increasing Protein Content in Pea Flour for Aquaculture
HANOVER, MA – A supplier of grains and food ingredients trying to enter the lucrative pet food, aquaculture, or fish food, market needed a processing method for the production of protein-rich, higher-value pea flour. The solution had to be cost-effective and also capable of handling high capacity throughout production. The supplier’s search for the key to creating a pea flour with increased protein led them to Sturtevant.
Sturtevant Inc. is a manufacturer of particle size reduction and air classification equipment based in Hanover, Massachusetts. Sturtevant worked closely with the supplier to understand their requirement of increasing the protein content from 24% up to 50%. Sturtevant came back with a two-step process including the FCM Fine Classifier Mill and the SuperFine Air Classifier. The Sturtevant FCM Fine Classifier Mill is an air-swept impact mill with integral classifier and the SuperFine Air Classifier is a stand-alone air classifier designed for separations in the 45-3 micron range.
The two step process started with the Sturtevant FCM Fine Classifier Mill which reduced the particle size of the split peas to a 30-50 micron flour. In the second step, the SuperFine Air Classifier fractionated the flour at 18-30 microns to make a 50-52% protein-rich fine product and a 63-70% starch-rich coarse product. In addition, the setup also included a real-time, online particle size analyzer and explosion-protection features on the processing equipment to complete the setup.
Tomas Johansson, Director of Sturtevant FCM Mills, and Joe Muscolino, Senior Product Manager of Sturtevant Air Classifiers, understood that certain projects require multi-step solutions and “being able to offer multiple machines, and their experts, can be invaluable to our clients who require particle reduction and separation for a single material.” Sturtevant’s two machines allowed the supplier to produce high quality, protein-rich pea flour perfect for use in the aquaculture or fish food markets.
Sturtevant Inc. is the leading family-owned manufacturer of material processing equipment including its patented Micronizer® jet mill which produces sub-micron sized particles, FCM (Fine Classifier Mill), an air-swept impact mill with integral classifier, Simpactor® and Infestroyer®, centrifugal, pin-type mills and three types of high performance air classifiers that separate fine and coarse particles with precision and accuracy.
